Martin Luther King Day January 17Rebecca
Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday in the United States, which commemorates the life and accomplishments of Martin Luther King Jr. – more famous as Dr. King. The holiday was established on January 20th, 1976, by US president Gerald Ford to coincide with the birthday of the late Martin Luther King Jr., who was born on January 15th 1929.
This federal holiday is observed throughout most of the United States on the third Monday in January. It is not observed at all in Hawaii and Puerto Rico, where it would be difficult to commemorate an event that happened in Birmingham Alabama or Atlanta Georgia.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a defining moment each year when Americans across the country step up to make our communities more equitable and take action to build the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dream. While Dr. King believed the Beloved Community was possible, he acknowledged and fought for systemic change. His example is our call to action.
Observed each year on the third Monday in January, MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. AmeriCorps has been charged with leading this effort for the past quarter century.
